Prototyping without Assets
Making a prototype is the first step to any successful product. By prototyping, we can get a clear idea of what does and does not work for our game. It also allows us to streamline our design process throughout, so the finished product is that much better for it.
Prototyping without assets (or using placeholder assets) allows for the separation of mechanics from aesthetics. We can use the prototyping phase to determine what kind of game we want to make before we spend any time or resources on assets that may or may not be used in the final product. Games are extremely mutable while prototyping, and may change wildly in size, scope, and direction.
Next, we will begin working on a powerup system.
